SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — A Chinese supermarket caught fire Friday morning.

Salt Lake Chinatown is located at 3390 South State Street.

South Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Blaine Daimaru said the fire was reported when passers-by noticed smoke and flames coming from the roof. When they arrived, firefighters found a rooftop climate control unit on fire.

Daimaru said there was some sort of maintenance being done on the unit, and the workers turned off the power and gas to it when the fire broke out. This kept the fire damage to a minimum, and officials hope the damage was contained to just the roof of the building.

"It could have been pretty bad," Daimaru added.

Firefighters were working to contain the flames when FOX 13 arrived on scene. By that time, neither flames nor smoke could be seen from outside the building.

While they know the origin of the fire, the exact cause is being investigated.
