With album release reprise show postponed, Maddy Walsh is performing on a free livestream

Ithaca musician Maddy Walsh, of Maddy Walsh and the Blind Spots, launched her new solo album “Humanmade Thing” at a sold-out Hangar Theatre concert back in November, and a reprise show was scheduled for Friday night, her birthday, at the Center for the Arts in Homer. With that show now postponed until May, the performer is hosting a free birthday livestream.

“I still want to sing for you, and I’m making a fancy dress, so pour yourself a flute of bubbles, step into your sparkliest attire, and join us from your living rooms at 5pm EST,” says Maddy, who’s known for flashy garb at her live shows.

She tells 14850 Magazine “It’s not really safe for us all to gather right now,” so she’ll be performing “just a few songs with Suave and my dad, super low-key living room style.”

The show is in support of her album “Humanmade Thing,” available at MaddyWalsh.net on a CD or thumb drive for $12, or as a pay-what-you-like digital download. There are also 10.5-inch square prints of Yen Ospina’s gorgeous album artwork available, or fans can buy a CD two-pack of “Humanmade Thing” along with “The Tunnel Sessions,” an album Maddy released last year with partner Mike Suave.

“We waited so long to release this material,” Maddy said of the new album, “because I wanted to give it its due. I love these songs, and I wanted to be able to perform them for people. The past year and a half has been a crazy time for us all, and songwriters and performers are certainly among those who’ve struggled. I’ve watched a lot of painful and beautiful shifts in life path and identity.”

Maddy refers to “Humanmade Thing” as “songs that seek to unearth the discord between our human tendency toward destruction and oppression and our capacity to create beauty and support.”

“Friends of mine quit jobs, moved across the country, went to rehab, got divorced, started businesses, had babies,” she adds. “The forced zoom-out shook up a lot of things. I’m grateful to have music as a constant—I can’t imagine ever not being called to write and sing, and maybe there’s more to say now than ever.”

“A lot is still out of our control,” the songwriter says. “I won’t get to sing for a room full of sweet people in a beautiful room accompanied by a killer band on my birthday this year like I planned to. But I can still put on a fancy dress and sing to you… even if it’s through a screen!”

Maddy says she welcomes “tips” for the “band” via Venmo, PayPal, or CashApp, but “What’s better than a tip is supporting the music directly by buying it on www.MaddyWalsh.net.”
