The Woods Hole Film Festival will continue its virtual season series into 2022 with the feature documentary “Soy Cubana” by Jeremy Ungar and Ivaylo Getov. The film will be available to stream Thursday, January 13 through Sunday, January 16. The festival will host a live online question and answer period with the directors and the producer on Saturday, January 15, at 7 PM.
In 2016, the short film, “Soy Cubana,” screened at the Woods Hole Film Festival and had a successful festival run. Following the short’s success, the Vocal Vidas, an all-female a cappella group from Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of Afro-Cuban music, were invited to perform in the United States for the very first time.
As diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba began to close, they traveled to Los Angeles, playing in restaurants, jazz clubs and preparing for their biggest concert ever in Los Angeles. The journey of the Vocal Vidas came to resemble the story of two cultures, geographically close, yet ideologically disparate, as they begin to reconnect in the face of international uncertainty.
The filmmakers had no idea what that concert would lead to but they knew they needed to film their journey, which led to the feature film.
As they continued to follow the Vocal Vidas, the United States’ social and political dynamics with Cuba evolved in ways they could not have foreseen and their small documentary grew into a feature with a much broader resonance. It became a film about crossing borders and about the capacity for human connection. The film runs 80 minutes.
The Woods Hole Film Festival Virtual Screening Series will run through May 2022 and will present independent films and special live events hosted on its online streaming platform each month. Additional virtual and live screening events will be added as well. Selections include films from the Woods Hole Film Festival as well as independent films curated specifically for the series. The series is part of the Woods Hole Film Festival’s commitment to offer year-round independent film programming to supplement the annual summer festival.
“Soy Cubana” will be available to watch between Thursday, January 13, at 8 AM and Sunday, January 16, at midnight. Ticket purchasers will also receive a link to the virtual question and answer session. Once the film starts, the viewer will have 48 hours to finish watching, or until midnight on Sunday, January 16, whichever comes first.
For the best community viewing experience, it is suggested that viewers watch the film at 5 PM on Saturday, January 15, and then join Woods Hole Film Festival executive director Judy Laster and the directors of “Soy Cubana,” for the question and answer session at 7 PM. Tickets are $14 per person, $12 for festival members, $20 per household, $17 for members, and are on sale in advance at the festival’s website.
The virtual series will continue with the feature drama “Small Town Wisconsin” by Niels Mueller, available Thursday, January 27, through Sunday, January 30.
