A young woman is shot in the head as a gunman opens fire on a car in Providence.

Police say it was a targeted attack.

Investigators say five gunshots hit the front end of the car just before 11:00 Thursday night while it was on Elmwood Avenue.

One of the shots grazed a 21-year-old passenger in the forehead.

Providence Police told NBC 10 Friday the shooting was not random, and that the shooter was familiar with either the car or the people in the car.

Investigators say the driver, another young woman, told them an unknown person opened fire on the car.

She drove another mile and a half up Elmwood, to a Shell gas station, where police were called to the scene.

The first officer there saw the car parked at a pump, the driver outside next to the car, and the victim in the front seat with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The officer noted that the passenger was alert and talking at the time, before being taken to the hospital.

Police say the victim is ok.

She was apparently out of the hospital Friday.

Police have not made any arrests yet in the shooting.
