ArtPower Live Performances Return in February

Starting in February, 18 performances – from chamber music, to dance, to special events – return to ArtPower stages. This season, ArtPower has invited back favorites, including Ronald K. Brown\EVIDENCE, who is making its return to San Diego for the first time in nearly 15 years, as well as Ariel Quartet performing the exciting finale of the Beethoven Cycle.

Season highlights

Highlights this season includes the return of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham with their newest evening-length work An Untitled Love; and talks with literary giants, Neil Gaiman and David Sedaris—all happening in downtown San Diego at Balboa Theatre. The jazz series features all-stars, such as Kandace Spring, once described by Prince as having “a voice that could melt snow”; trumpeter, Sean Jones, and choreographer, tap dancer, and vocalist, Brinae Ali, have teamed up to create a piece that fuses elements of jazz, tap, hip-hop, and bebop, inspired by the music and life story of Dizzy Gillespie; and “beat scientist”, Makaya McCraven, brings his latest album, Deciphering the Message, to San Diego.

Spring Global Music Series

In the spring, their Global Music series artists take center stage. In April, Les Filles de Illighadad brings the distinct sounds of Illighadad, Niger to San Diego, drawing from two distinct styles of regional sound, ancient village choral chants and desert guitar. Also in April, Koto visionar, Yumi Kurosawa, teams up with renowned tabla player, Eric Phinney, for a program that brings together two expressive musical traditions, bridging the cultures of Japan and India. The Global Music series concludes in May with “The Hendrix of the Saraha”, Vieux Farka Touré, whose music incorporates elements of rock and Latin music into the Saharan blues and traditional melodies of his native Mali.
