The Mets have their new hitting coach in Eric Chavez, who was reportedly plucked from his new role as the Yankees assistant hitting coach on Thursday morning. With Chavez’s hire, along with the hiring of third base coach Joey Cora, Buck Showalter’s coaching staff is starting to take shape.
According to SNY’s Andy Martino, Showalter and the Mets were hoping to add a former Met to the staff in Curtis Granderson.
Per Martino, the Mets reached out to Granderson to “gauge interest” in the former outfielder’s desire to be on the coaching staff, but Granderson “politely declined.”
Granderson played 16 seasons, four of them with the Mets, including in 2015 when New York reached the World Series. Showalter had plenty of looks at Granderson as a player during his time as Orioles manager, when Baltimore and Granderson’s Yankees faced off in the 2012 ALDS, and plenty of times during the regular season.
Granderson has been widely considered to be a strong candidate to join a team as a coach or in a front office role since he retired in 2019, but it appears as if he currently isn’t interested in taking on that next chapter of his baseball life just yet, if ever at all.
