Global Food Prices The Highest in a Decade

I’m Tricia Stoma, with today’s AgDay Minute.

While global food prices fell in December, prices for all last year are still the highest in a decade. The UN Food and Agricultural Organization reported that the food price index for all of last year increased to a reading of 125.7. That’s up more than 28-percent from 2020 and the highest since 2011. And expectations for this year are not encouraging, with a senior economist for the organization saying the ongoing global pandemic and increasing costs leave little room for optimism about a return to a more stable market condition.

Walmart has plans to take grocery delivery to a whole new level by having employees put the food right in your fridge. It says it’s scaling its In-Home service from being available to 6-million homes to 30-million by the end of this year. It plans to hire more than 3-thousand associate delivery drivers and build out a fleet of 100-percent electric-run delivery vans.

And how does this sound…a taco subscription service? Taco Bell is rolling out something called the Taco Lover’s Pass. For ten dollars a month, customers can get one taco a day for 30-straight days. Customers can sign up for the pass starting today, but you must be a member of the restaurant chain’s rewards program.
