The Drew County Sheriff's Office is investigating after skeletal remains were found in a wooded area.
Deputies received a report on Dec. 27 from a hunter who believed he had found a human skull along a shooting lane where he hunted, according to the sheriff's office. When deputies arrived at the scene, it was confirmed that the skull belonged to a human.
The sheriff's office said investigators photographed the scene and sent the remains to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for testing. The remains were reportedly "weathered greatly" and had to have been in the area for an extended amount of time.
Sheriff Mark Gober said it's very uncommon for remains to be found in the county.
"This something we don't normally see or work in our rural community," Gober said. "But if we find remains, we allow the professionals at the crime lab determine the DNA of the individual and the nature in which they died."
Authorities said they have ordered some cadaver dogs to help locate the other remains of the body.
Gober said there is a person who has been missing since January of 2015 but until they have the results from the crime lab, there is no way to know for sure if it is the missing person. That person reportedly went missing while he was hunting.
