Golden Globes 2022: no red carpet, no television broadcast, and now, no celebrities in attendance.
Amid ongoing criticism of the Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a new report from Variety alleges that talent bookers were unable to get celebs to agree to give out the awards on Sunday, January 9. CNN also confirmed there will be no red carpet this year. The news comes after years of criticism around the lack of diversity among HFPA members and the stars and projects they nominate, which culminated in a Hollywood boycott that began in the first half of 2021. NBC, who owns the rights to the ceremony, announced in May that it wouldn't air the Golden Globes 2022 on its network.
The HFPA has been under increased scrutiny ever since the Los Angeles Times ran two exposes in February 2021 detailing the organization's many “ethical lapses.” This included members being courted by studios, as well as the confirmation that there were no Black journalists in the HFPA. HFPA also had to apologize after the LA Times reported that former president Phillip Berk had shared an article with association members that referred to Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate group.” Soon after, the HFPA announced that they would make least 13 percent of its membership Black by the end of the year.
In March 2021, nearly 100 PR firms representing those in the film industry signed a letter saying they would “continue to refrain from any HFPA-sanctioned events.” A number of high-profile celebrities, including Ava Duvernay, Sterling K. Brown, Tom Cruise (who gave back three of his Golden Globe awards), Mark Ruffalo, and more made public criticisms of HFPA. Meanwhile, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler used last year’s Golden Globes opening monologue to call out the organization for its lack of Black membership. "The point is, even with stupid things [like award shows], inclusivity is important and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press,” Fey said at the time. “I realize, HFPA, maybe you guys didn't get the memo because your workplace is a back booth of a French McDonald's, but you gotta change that."
Over the past eight months, the HFPA has introduced new members and organizational changes in attempts to address the ongoing criticism.
The HFPA will announce the winners of the 2022 Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton hotel at 6 p.m. PT. At the intimate ceremony, which won’t have an audience because of COVID-19 precautions, Kyle Bowser, Senior Vice President of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau will discuss the Reimagine Coalition. According to a press release, he’ll talk more about the “joint five-year initiative to increase diversity, equity and inclusion across the global entertainment industry.”
