EastEnders spoilers follow.

It's been and gone, and we've packed away our trees, but EastEnders' big Christmas episodes have left us with a handful of loose ends that aren't so easy to put away in a box.

While they exposed some secrets, dropped a couple of bombshells, and delivered a couple of twists that had been kept out of the spoilers beforehand, the dramatic festive specials have also left us with even more questions than answers...

1. Has Gray got away with it?

BBC

We were cautiously optimistic that Gray's evil reign was about to come crashing down over Christmas, but sure enough, he still walked into 2022 a free man. And it doesn't look like this story is going to be concluding in the near future, either.

Chelsea was resolute in her determination to escape Gray post-Christmas, but her priorities quickly changed when she went into premature labour and gave birth at 24 weeks.

With baby Jordan now fighting for his life in hospital, Chelsea has assured Whitney that she will deal with the Gray situation once she has the strength, and she's still keeping up the pretence next week.

So, that leaves us with the all-important question: when exactly will Gray be caught out, or is he quite literally going to get away with murder? It's EastEnders, so we doubt it, but talk about kicking the can down the road…

2. And what about Kush and Tina?

As promised, Gray's story did largely go back to its roots over the Christmas period, with Chantelle's harrowing abuse – and subsequent murder – brought back to the forefront.

Not that it's easy to forget, but viewers were reminded of the months of physical and emotional torment that Chantelle had endured at the hands of Gray until her death in 2020, when Whitney dug out her devastating forum posts.

Of course, Whitney only knows a fraction of the story, and the sinister truths behind Tina's whereabouts, and Kush's death, are still buried six feet under. However, with fans wondering if a subtle scene earlier this week could be a clue to what's to come, could this secret be dug up sooner rather than later?

3. What now for Chelsea?

Chelsea's priorities are now solely with her newborn son Jordan, but will she still follow through with her plan to escape eventually?

After her ill-fated emergency getaway drastically backfired, it looks like Chelsea is stuck with Gray for the foreseeable – and she'll continue to play the role of the loving wife in next week's episodes.

Whitney will also encourage Chelsea to keep her head in the game, but what does the future really look like for her now?

4. Will Rocky learn the truth about Dotty?

BBC

Or does he already know? So many questions, so few answers. At the moment, anyway.

Sandy dropped the daddy of all bombshells when she told Dotty that Rocky was her dad, before walking out of Walford on Christmas Day (you know, as you do).

Dotty hasn't mentioned the life-changing discovery since, and there doesn't appear to be any sign of this in future spoilers either, leaving us to wonder if and when Rocky will learn of this revelation as well...

5. Will Sonia forgive Rocky?

BBC

Sonia's dream family Christmas descended into a nightmare when she discovered that Rocky wasn't actually her dad at all, but was Dotty's uncle (aka Tom Cotton).

Sonia wasted no time in disowning Rocky, and Kathy did the same, but there's been some telltale signs that they aren't done with him completely. Sonia, in particular, was given a chance to reflect on her situation with Rocky when he suffered another health scare and was rushed back into hospital.

Shirley later told Sonia that Rocky still loved her like she was his daughter, and urged her to reconsider what she wanted their relationship to look like in the long-term. As it looks like Rocky will be sticking around, could Sonia be tempted to give him a second chance?

6. What will Aaron do?

Aaron decided against detonating the bomb at The Albert on New Year's Eve due to the fact his sister Dana was at the club with Bobby, but as we know, the story is far from over.

With Aaron under increasing pressure from far-right extremist group leader Neil, he will make the disturbing decision to lead a job in Manchester instead.

Harvey desperately tries to persuade his son otherwise, and the police will also be getting involved next week, but will this be enough to stop Aaron in his sinister tracks?

7. Are Mick and Linda over for good?

BBC

Christmas really doesn't seem to be the most wonderful time of year for Mick and Linda, as they've hit the rocks once again. After some troublesome interference from a scheming Janine, the Carters were torn apart – and not even Nancy's New Year visit could save them.

With Linda now back on the booze (naughty Janine!), Mick has been forced to accept that his marriage could be over for good. But is that ever really the case for the unwavering Carter couple?

Kellie Bright – who plays Linda – is currently on maternity leave after giving birth to her third child and only returned briefly for that short stint, so it's likely we won't get the answer to this question until she's back filming…

8. Does Martin still have feelings for Stacey?

BBC

Much like Mick and Linda, there's often a sense that it's never truly over when it comes to Stacey and Martin.

The couple have been apart for the past few years, and Martin has had a whole, albeit disastrous, other marriage since then (and Stacey too, if we're getting technical), but there were a couple of hints that they could still find their way back to each other this year.

After going head to head for the marker inspector's job, Martin was chuffed when he was successful over Stacey – but had a change of heart later on. Unknown to his ex, Martin called Mr Lister to decline the job, pointing him in Stacey's direction instead. Hmm, you're not fooling us, Martin...

9. Will Nancy give Zack another chance?

embargoed 27122021 0001, nancy carter, zack hudson, eastenders
BBC

Zack faced a lonely Christmas last month, after being booted out by his furious sister Sharon, but things started to look up for him slightly as the New Year approached.

Despite being set up by Janine, Zack was given the opportunity to tell Nancy how much he cares about her – urging her to give their relationship another chance.

Although Nancy declined, not wanting to destroy the foundation she and Zack have rebuilt since the accident, a drunk Linda also picked up on their spark during their doomed visit on New Year's Eve. But will Zack continue to fight for Nancy, or could he divert his attention elsewhere?

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
