GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Maurice Benard Shows off His Christopher Award

Tags:

Please join us in congratulating GENERAL HOSPITAL star Maurice Benard on not only being an award-winning actor but now an award-winning author! In April 2021, it was announced that Benard had been honored with a Christopher Award for his New York Times Bestselling book Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me on and Off General Hospital. And now the actor is showing off the trophy he never expected to receive.

“When I was young,” he admitted in an Instagram video, “I would never in a million years think that I was gonna be an actor. At all. I thought actors came from the sky. And if you told me I was gonna write a book, there’s no way I’d ever… I didn’t think I was capable of it. Thank you, [co-writer] Sue Black. And then to win an award for a book… man, feels like I died and went to heaven.”

The Christopher Awards were created in 1949 to celebrate writers, producers, directors, authors, and illustrators whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit” and reflects the organization’s motto: “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” Prizes are awarded in categories like television, cable, streaming, feature films, and books. Benard’s tome won in the Books for Adults category.

After beginning his acting career as Nico on ALL MY CHILDREN in 1987, Benard joined the cast of GH in 1993 as Sonny Corinthos, and the rest is history. However, the actor has publicly admitted that the early years on the soap were rough as he was battling with his bipolar disorder, and that struggle is chronicled in his award-winning book. Very open about his bipolar, Benard has used his celebrity platform to continue speaking out about mental health, and even developed State of Mind, an ongoing series for YouTube where he discusses mental health issues with others.

With a life as interesting as Benard’s, we’re sure he’s got another book in him and we hope to read it some day!
