A Clive lawyer was appointed by Gov. Kim Reynolds Wednesday to be the executive director of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission

Stan Thompson, 61, is a lawyer at Dentons Davis Brown P.C. He has experience in financial, health care and agricultural law, according to the firm's website. He has also served on the Iowa Public Information Board since 2020 and spent six years on the Iowa State University Alumni Association Board as a member and its chair.

Thompson starts his work for the commission Jan. 10.

“I’m honored to be appointed by Governor Reynolds,” Thompson said in a news release. “I look forward to performing this important role in protecting Iowans’ civil rights.”

Thompson replaces Elizabeth Johnson who resigned as executive director in February. Charles Hill, the board's investigations supervisor, served as interim director since then.

The Iowa Civil Rights Commission is charged with enforcing the Iowa Civil Rights Act. The commission enforces federal and state laws which prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. It also works to prevent discrimination by providing training and education to the public.

“Stan’s extensive experience in business litigation, practicing for the past 36 years, coupled with his knowledge in ethics and professional conduct will make him a valued leader for the commission," Reynolds said in a news release.
