As put in a nutshell by MTV themselves.”’Catfish: The TV Show’ tackles the mystery and complexities of dating in a digital world.”
See, as defined by Urban Dictionary, one essentially becomes catfished when the person they’re engaged with via the Internet (usually in the romantic sense) isn’t exactly the image they put up online. This all stems from longtime host’s Nev Schulman’s own experience, which he documented in a 2010 film “Catfish” from which the series spawned.
In the now-nine seasons it has been running, Schulman along with co-hosts Max Joseph and Kamie Crawford investigate whether or not someone’s love interest that they know solely through technology is who they say they are, although it’s also more than just outing those who make fake profiles.
“Whether or not two people are totally lying to each other and it turns out to be a huge disaster, that’s only the first part of the story,” once explained Schulman in a 2021 Zap2It article. “We then want to know why they are doing it, who they are, what they are feeling, what led them to this place, and why that resonates with thousands of other young people who have the same feelings, who don’t have someone to talk to, or don’t know how to express themselves.”
