We haven’t known This Is Us‘ Phillip very long… but way he gazed at Kate in Tuesday’s season premiere told us a lot about the heretofore reserved Brit. That said, new cast addition Chris Geere previews that even though a flash-forward in Season 5 clued us in to the fact that Kate and Phillip will eventually marry, there’ll be no whirlwind romance between the two. Instead, Geere says, there’ll be a “slow build” from co-workers to life partners.
And that makes sense, given how Kate is very married — to Toby — at the current point in the story. Consequently, the romance between Chrissy Metz’s character and Geere’s is “a slow builder, because the storytelling on the show is so specific and so detailed that they don’t need to answer any questions immediately,” Geere tells TVLine. “But there is — I’ve always thought Philip was always quite an icy character, but when you meet him in this season, he starts to thaw a little bit. And there are those moments, in terms of connection.”
In fact, we saw one of them in the premiere. Kate rushed to school for an “emergency” (which really was a ruse to bring her in so the students could serenade her on her birthday), and inadvertently overheard an argument between Phillip and his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend, Jessica. His chief complaint: She’s boring. Before she took off, an angry Jessica mentioned a past trauma behind which Phillip may or may not be hiding. (Read a full recap of the premiere.)
Not long after that exchange came the moment where Phillip watches Kate — who is moved by the kids’ rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” — without her noticing. “I like the fact that she was so in touch with her emotions,” Geere says. “And I think that my character has been very closed-off, emotionally.”
Well, Phillip is British, right? “Yes, I’m supposed to be closed-off, emotionally,” Geere says, laughing. “It’s terrible and charming at the same time, hopefully. But yeah, I think it’s going to take a while.” — With reporting by Diane Gordon
NOPE
I’m sorry but it is not at all believable that such an attractive man would be with a woman like Kate. Any woman who has spent 5 minutes in the real world knows this. What are the producers smoking?
It’s sad that you think all “good-looking” men are all so shallow.
You know nothing of what other people think or feel, little girl…
They already set that up when they showed him dumping his current girlfriend by basically telling her she’s beautiful but there is no substance behind her smile. There are plenty of men out there who see more than weight. And, honestly, his character already has ten times more chemistry with Kate than the character he played on Million Little Things had with Maggie.
Looks fade, some people care about more than looks in a partner
Wasn’t she supposed to lose weight in season 1? Guess that never happened.
Maybe this will change for me, but I don’t really see them together. I am not sure they have the chemistry, but I could be wrong.
I dated a very obese woman for a long time. I’m average sized and actually was more ripped then. Her personality and outlook were enough to make it work for dating but I had real reservation s about marrying someone who was clearly headed for major health issues. I had older parents w medical.issues which consumed my time and I just could not see myself signing on for that. We are still friends and after our break up she had bariatric surgery which has helped her tremendously. I say that all bc it appears that Metz has gained more weight and a realistic storyline would address her trying to improve her health for herself not for anyone else.
Geere will have to work really hard to find a ‘connection’ like he had with Aya Cash in “You’re the Worst”. He couldn’t pull it off with other actresses like Sarah Hyland and Alison Miller.
Despite the horrible things he said to his soon-to-be- ex-gf, I have to admit, it was pretty funny. Especially, when he called himself pasty. And it established that he wasn’t a superficial person. She was beautiful, but boring. Kate is also beautiful, but with substance. Which is why he falls in love with her.
i just don’t like this pairing at all.
I don’t want Philip/Kate relationship. I’m 100% Tivy and always have been. Something big will have to happen to change my mind
Chrissy looked like she gained a lot of weight I don’t like the pairing either
