A woman claimed in a now-viral post that she was asked to leave her boyfriend's birthday dinner so that he and a group of his friends could talk shop.
Posting to Reddit's "Am I The A**hole" forum on Wednesday under the username u/Umyasssqueen29, the woman explained that because she was the one who arranged the dinner, she refused to leave.
So far, the post has garnered more than 13,00 upvotes and over 2,500 comments.
At the beginning of her post, the woman explained that her boyfriend and the majority of his friends are doctors. She, however, is not.
"Most of his friends are from work and they all seem to dislike me and act distant maybe [because] I'm not a doctor too?" she wrote.
Still, she told her boyfriend to invite his friends to the birthday dinner she'd arranged. So he did, and his friends arrived, but things quickly took a turn for the worse.
"The tension started when one of them started making remarks about the way I dressed. I sucked it up but another friend started interrogating me about my degree then implying I was ignorant for my food choice," she said.
"An hour later another one asked if I could leave because they wanted to discuss work stuff and it's confidential."
But the woman refused to leave, resulting in an argument.
"An argument ensued and they 'demanded' that I leave but I said 'absolutely not,'" she claimed.
"My boyfriend finally spoke up after it escalated and asked that I keep the peace and go home but I refused and reminded him and let his friends know that I'd arranged for this party and paid for it and so they should leave since they're just 'guests,'" she recalled.
Eventually, the group left, and the woman's boyfriend blamed her for ruining his birthday.
Of course, not getting along with a partner's friends can spell trouble for the relationship.
Speaking to Bustle, dating and relationship coach Anna Morgenstern warned that the "opinions of your partner's friends could weigh heavily on them and could potentially turn them against you."
Michael Kaye, former global public relations manager for OkCupid added: "People don't always listen to everything their friends say, but they do trust their opinions when it comes to relationships. When faced with dating a partner that their friends don't like, more than three times the amount of people on OkCupid said they would ditch their partner compared to those who would end a friendship."
Many Redditors felt that u/Umyasssqueen29 was right to stand her ground, and encouraged her to end her relationship.
"NTA [not the a**hole]. Are you dating Satan? What type of boyfriend asks you to leave the birthday dinner you paid for! Feel the joy that you ruined his stupid birthday and dump him ASAP!" exclaimed u/woodsj06.
"When someone shows you who they are, believe them. He chose his 'friends' although you arranged everything. Asking you to leave was incredibly rude—and that is without you hosting. You deserve someone who treats you better," said u/tarnishau14.
Redditor u/tatasz added: "You know your bf doesn't respect you, right?...He should be the one to apologize for not standing up to you. Dump his sore butt, he can have his doctor friends, you can do better."
