The completion of the new Don Haskins PK-8 School allowed for students, prekindergarten through third-grade, to start the new semester Monday at the renovated campus.
The opening of the second renovated building at Don Haskins School was an El Paso ISD bond consolidation of Lincoln Middle School with Roberts and Bond elementary schools.
The school district is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at 10 a.m.
District voters approved $44.3 million for the construction of the new building and the renovation of existing buildings at the Lincoln site to consolidate the three campuses into a modern school that will serve the needs of the region.
The school in the Upper Valley neighborhood, welcomes students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth.
The school boasts 21st-century classrooms, a new gym and library, fine-arts classrooms and modern administrative offices, stated the school district's news release.
Renovations to existing facilities include upgrades to HVAC, new electrical systems and aesthetic renovations throughout the campus.
The campus was named after legendary University of Texas at El Paso basketball coach Don Haskins, a Hall of Fame inductee who is credited with bringing racial equity to collegiate sports.
Coach Haskins’ family is expected to attend the ceremony and participate in the dedication of a portrait donated to the school.
The school colors are orange and Columbia blue – UTEP’s color scheme when Haskins coached at the university.
