Ubisoft announced the Ubisoft+ subscription service will be coming to Xbox consoles in the future.

The subscription service is out now for PC and gives access to over 100 Ubisoft titles for a monthly cost. It includes games, DLC at launch, and monthly rewards like cosmetics, boosters, in-game items, and more.

Ubisoft+ is priced at $14.99 per month for PC access and $17.99 per month for multi access on PC and on cloud gaming services Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.

Can count on good ol' Ubisoft to go all in with the subscription service model, lol.

While there is merit to such a service I really hope we don't see this kind of adoption among the broader gaming developer community at large.

Can you imagine a Capcom+ subscription, a Naughty Dog+ subscription, and so on? There would be no end to it.

In their defense, the service has been out for a little over 2 years now lol, but I completely agree with you! There's waaaaaaay too many subscription services as is.

We already have plenty with EA Access, GP, PSNow, Ubisoft+ and whatnot.

Yeah, we're seeing that already with film/TV streaming. It really took off with Netflix, but now we also have Disney+, Peacock, HBO Now, and too many others to list.

In the same way some people only subscribe to one such service, it'll be hard for late entrant video game subscription services (or those with smaller catalogues and/or higher prices) to gain traction. The more gaming subscription services you already have, and the more expensive a new one is, the less likely you are to be stoked about a new one.

Game Pass is the Netflix of game streaming, the big player that works with most devices and has enough content to keep most people happy. So that's the standard for price and content that everyone else will be compared to. The only edge Ubisoft+ has is the inclusion of Day 1 DLC, but that's not enough to justify the price tag they're asking, at least not for me. I need to play a game for a long time and get invested in it before I start to care about things like DLC.

Theoretically it should be easy, sub to one service for a month watch what you like there, cancel and go for the other, rinse and repeat. Same could be done with plenty of game services. But most people keep those subs active, or worse like in my house fragmented content that one person of the family like one and another one like another and in the end sum of all of them are more costly than cable tv.

VAMatt scrapking (on 05 January 2022)

Games are still available to purchase on their own. So the subscription services don't bother me.

scrapking VAMatt (on 06 January 2022)

Exactly right. I don't subscribe to Amazon Prime Video, for example, as there's so little there that interests me that I just buy those few bits of content outright, for example. But I stay subscribed to Disney+ because all the new Marvel and Star Wars content alone makes it worthwhile (let alone that I'm in Canada where we don't have Hulu, but since Disney owns 2/3rds of Hulu they include all the Hulu originals in a new "Star" section of Disney+ at no extra cost, unlike in the U.S. where you have to get Hulu separately, or pay for a bundle that probably includes ESPN and other things you may not care about).

I think Disney+ has the right model. Instead of a Marvel TV, or a Star Wars Streaming, or a National Geographic Channel, or a Disney Channel, or a 20th Century+, or (in Canada) a Hulu/Star, you get it all in one subscription.

I guess that's how Game Pass approaches it too. PC Game Pass also includes EA Play at no extra cost. Game Pass Ultimate includes all that, plus Xbox Game Pass, xCloud streaming, and Xbox Live Gold. Everyone I know with Game Pass pays the little bit extra for Ultimate, because it gives you SO much more.

That is true, and Im a collector (plus buyer of deep discounts on PSN), so I havent sub to anything yet and as you said so far it isnt a problem since the games are still sold stand alone. My only real concern with sub gaming is that it is more appeal to have multiplayer and GAAS type of games to keep the cost lower and customers engaged and those arent the type of games I like to play.

rapsuperstar31 (on 05 January 2022)

$15 a month sounds a bit steep. I think I've played 4 Ubisoft games in the last decade Immortals Fenix Rising, Rayman Legends, and South Park Fractured But Whole and Zombi U. I may try it out if they have a free trial, but I'm usually not too interested in Ubisoft games.

  • +5
G2ThaUNiT rapsuperstar31 (on 05 January 2022)

Same here, although I HIGHLY suggest you play South Park The Stick of Truth. It was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, but since Ubisoft was the publisher, it's included in their service. Fractured But Whole is almost always considered inferior to Stick of Truth.

Zippy6 rapsuperstar31 (on 05 January 2022)

A service like this should really just be used a month at a time imo. I.E a game comes out you really want to play, pay $15, finish it, cancel sub.

Pemalite Zippy6 (on 05 January 2022)

It's a Ubisoft game, so the physical discs depreciate in value stupidly quickly anyway... Often to that $15 price point or lower.

  • +6
VAMatt Pemalite (on 05 January 2022)

Yeah, but if you want to play it at launch you'll still pay full price. It's usually 60 to 90 days before you can consistently get it significantly below MSRP.

  • 0
Pemalite VAMatt (on 06 January 2022)

We are spoiled for choice with games... I think we can wait a few weeks for the price drop. Haha
And I would personally rather save 75% of my money and wait those few extra weeks.

  • 0
VAMatt Pemalite (on 06 January 2022)

Yes, I wait for most games as well. But, many people don't. Many people want to play on launch day.

Imaginedvl rapsuperstar31 (on 05 January 2022)

On Xbox, I bet we are going to see the same thing than EA Play. I'm pretty sure they are going to announce that Game Pass Ultimate members will get access to Ubisoft+ at some point. Will see :)

  • 0
Zippy6 Imaginedvl (on 05 January 2022)

EA Play is $5. Ubisoft+ is $15. No way is a $15 sub going to be included with a $15 gamepass ultimate membership.

  • +5
scrapking Zippy6 (on 05 January 2022)

I'm thinking you might both be right. Ubisoft+ is as expensive as it is because it includes all Ubisoft DLC on Day 1. So I'm thinking they create a lower-tier for inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate, but that doesn't include Day 1 DLC (and, maybe like EA Play, has a delay before AAA releases are added to the service). Microsoft has been rumoured to be negotiating with Ubi about a long-term Game Pass partnership of some sort. But I'm just speculating, of course!

  • +4
Imaginedvl Zippy6 (on 05 January 2022)

yah but it does not work like that...
The price is for the standalone version of it, including marketing cost which is probably the bulk of it, if they have a deal with Microsoft (like EA Play), the standalone price will not matter at the end, esp. if it means "guaranteed" revenue every month for all GamePass Ult. subscribers. Also, they can add a tier where GamePass ultimate gets game like 3 months after (like EA Play) etc.

  • 0
Zippy6 Imaginedvl (on 05 January 2022)

It does work like that. Ubisoft want to sell $15/mo subs to users on Xbox. If it's free on a $15/mo gamepass sub than literally no one will buy ubisoft+ separately and Microsoft cannot afford to compensate ubisoft adequately and have a profitable gamepass still. $15 sub free with another $15 sub is silly.

  • +4
Imaginedvl Zippy6 (on 05 January 2022)

w/e :) I will not try.

  • -1
scrapking Zippy6 (on 05 January 2022)

I don't think Ubisoft+ would be dropped into Game Pass as-is. It would have to be cut down to be more like EA Play, or be part of a higher-cost tier than the current GP Ultimate.

Who would want to pay $15 just to play Ubisoft games? Really? They have an odd ok game here and there but not this.

EA Access won't stimulate other publishers to do similar services.... yes sure.

  • +3

I'm glad it is. Anything is better than paying $60+ for a single game that maybe I won't even play that many times.

LudicrousSpeed DonFerrari (on 05 January 2022)

Did anyone ever say no other publishers would ever make a subscription service? I don’t think so.

The common complaint about EA Access was “oh no, now EVERY publisher will have a subscription and you’ll have to subscribe to be able to play all the games you can play today!!!”

The reality: EA and Ubisoft have subscriptions, and nothing is locked behind either of them. You can play the latest Madden or Ass Creed just fine whether you are subbed or not.

Haters took a hard L on this one ?

  • -3

I think you're getting downvoted for the. ????????. If you left off the last line about haters you'd be fine. The last line that makes you look like a console warrior.

oh great, for a monthly fee of probably 20 CAD, I can play the same 'ubisoft' game over and over again. No thanks. I'll toss some cash to keep the game forever.

  • +2
Shiken Runa216 (on 06 January 2022)

Or wait a few months and buy it at the same price as the sub anyway. Honestly I don't see this taking off on XBox. Gamepass has incredible value and you really get bang for your buck. Ubi+ to me is no different than EAPlay, but over twice as expensive.

So why would anyone pay 15 bucks for Ubi+, when the same price will get you gamepass, gold, and EAPlay with an Ultimate sub?

  • +3
aTokenYeti (on 05 January 2022)

Not sure if Xbox could work this out or if Ubisoft would be on board, but I would absolutely be interested in a $20 a month tier of gamepass that includes EA play and Ubi+. I don’t play activision blizzard titles anymore and take two releases one interesting thing every 5-7 years, so that one service would cover pretty much all of my gaming needs

  • +1
scrapking aTokenYeti (on 05 January 2022)

I think they could make that work, but it wouldn't be Ubi+ as depicted here. Ubi+ includes Day 1 AAA releases, and Day 1 DLC. EA Play doesn't include either of those things. So an Ubi tier added to Game Pass probably wouldn't either.

  • 0
VAMatt scrapking (on 05 January 2022)

EA has Fifa and Madden though, which are subscription drivers. A Ubisoft service with the same limitations as EA Play wouldn't provide as much value to as many people. Most people play Ass Creed or Far Cry, finish it (or quit) and move on to something else. People don't move on as fast from Fifa and Madden.

A Ubisoft service would have to include something more to be worth the same money to the average gamer. Maybe games on day one, but no DLC (then they can keep selling that separately).

  • 0
scrapking VAMatt (on 06 January 2022)

Yeah, that would be reasonable. And that way Ubi would be getting both subscription revenue and selling the DLC and MTX. And selling the games at a discount too, should someone wish to buy it, if they copy that part of the EA Play/Game Pass business model.

I don't know why anyone thinks the Game Pass business model isn't sustainable. It seems like a very sustainable model to me. Recurring revenue, plus game sales (in case the game leaves the service or you cancel your subscription), plus DLC sales, plus MTX revenue. Sounds like any publisher would love to have that.

  • +3
Mr Puggsly (on 06 January 2022)

I am open to more companies trying this subscription service thing. However, $15 is too expensive for Ubisoft given they don't put out much content or variety.

In comparison, Gamepass Ultimate with EA Access for the same price is a bargain.

EA Play was also out on Xbox for years before it came to any other systems. It launched on Xbox in 2014, on PC (originally as Origin Access Premier) in 2018, and PS in 2019. It seems Xbox is a flexible and welcoming platform for innovative business models, so maybe third-parties are inclined to try things there sooner than PS or Switch.

In the case of EA Access from what we heard Sony didn't allow EA Access there, could even be the same in here.

  • +4

Good point, Ubisoft may have tried to get Ubi+ on PS and been told no. Or they might still be negotiating with Sony, who might be demanding more than Ubi wants to pay.
