CANCELED – STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAM: The Galway Public Library, 2112 East St. in Galway, will not host the program Stress Reduction: Finding Freedom from Anxiety, Worry and Fear on January 5. BALLSTON SPA COMMITTEE MEETING: The Village of Ballston Spa’s Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will meet twice during the month of January to identify and discuss the effects of climate change and information technology advancements on the development, population, employment and economic prosperity of the village. The meetings will be held on the first and third Thursdays of the month, January 6 and January 20, at 7 pm at the Saratoga County Office Building at 50 West High Street in Ballston Spa. The January 6 meeting will feature guest speaker Dr. Bruce Piasecki, founder and president of AHC Group Inc., a general management consulting firm specializing in growth, energy, environment and sustainability. Dr. Piasecki will lead the discussion on how to address upcoming trends in climate and IT. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee has been formed to work in conjunction with a professional planning consultant to identify and study several topics over the course of the next year in order to create a final plan for approval by the Village board of trustees. DISCOVERY OF A MASTERPIECE: Join the Troy Public Library for this virtual event, January 6th, 2022, at 6:00 pm. We will be speaking to Mallory Mortillaro, who serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, NJ. While she was cataloging the artwork housed inside of the Hartley Dodge Memorial she uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930’s. After a year of research the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history. Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation. In this position she worked to authenticate an original Rodin sculpture, lost to the art world since the 1930’s. Mallory holds a BA and MAT, both from Drew University. She balances her work as an Art Historian with teaching 7th grade English. She lives in Whippany, New Jersey with her husband. This program is conducted via zoom. Registration is required. FARMING FORUM: Juggling Cover Crops, Manure, and Reduced Tillage – January 12, 2022 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Greenwich Elks, 130 Bulson Rd., Greenwich, NY 12834. Juggling Cover Crops, Manure and Reduced Tillage will be an interactive forum for farmers and researchers to share ideas and discuss what practices are working on farms and is organized by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County, the Agricultural Stewardship Association. Inc., and the Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District. A panel of farmers from our region will discuss the techniques they’ve used to increase use of cover crops and reduce tillage. Kirsten Workman will speak about her work on manure management, and Aaron Ristow from American Farmland Trust’s Genesee River Demonstration Farm Network will speak about the results network farmers have seen from incorporating innovative conservation practices on their farms. An exchange of ideas, questions and answers between participants and the farmer panel and researchers is encouraged. There is an option to attend in-person ($35/person) or online via Zoom ($15). PEACE TALK: Upper Hudson Peace Action presents Hyun Lee speaking on “Understanding Peace Prospects with Korea: A Korean Peace Treaty Is Key to a Nuclear Free Northeast Asia” on January 12, 2022, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM (EST) on Zoom. SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS: Regular Saratoga Springs City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. City Council meetings are held in the Music Hall at City Hall at this time. WINTER DISCOVERY NATURE WALK: On Saturday, January 22nd, at 3:30 pm Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be hosting a Winter Discovery Nature Walk. During this walk over gentle terrain, participants will learn about how the plants and animals living within the surrounding environment have adapted to survive the harsh conditions of winter. Together, participants will also discuss the basics of winter tree identification. If there is snow, this program will include searching for signs of recent animal activity, including looking for animal tracks in the snow. If needed, snowshoes will be available for rental prior to the program for $3 per participant. This walk is also being offered again on Saturday February 5th at 3:30pm. Registration is required. WINTER STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAM: Registration is now open for the Saratoga Stress Reduction Program, an eight-week course in mindfulness based meditation and stress reduction beginning January 22nd in person at Caffe Lena. The Saturday morning sessions are held 8:30-10 a.m. and run through March 12th and provide instruction in formal mindfulness meditation methods including a body scan, gentle yoga, sitting and walking meditation. The practices offer students a means of self-regulation and encourages greater awareness. Students learn to reduce symptoms of psychological and somatic distress and gain the ability to respond to challenges with less reactivity and greater clarity. The course also provides instruction in informal practices such as being in nature and eating with awareness. Midway through the course, students learn about the physiology of stress and how it relates to their reactivity patterns. Using the latest scientific research, they explore how the act of mindful noticing activates innate internal resources that can change our perception of daily events, including stressful ones. This altered appraisal allows students to use a broader range of both internal and external responses so that they need not remain locked in stressful patterns. MONTHLY INDOOR CRAFT & GARAGE SALE: On Sunday, Feb. 27, from 11-3 pm the popular Elks Ladies Auxiliary Indoor Craft and Garage Sale at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Club on Elks Lane will hold their monthly event. Admission is free with over 40 vendors; parking is great, bargains galore, and lunch. We offer household items, sports equipment, hand-made items, clothing, fabrics, food treats, body lotions, and just about anything you can imagine may be found here. New vendors are signing up every month. Snow or rain, the sales go on and it is a fun activity the entire family enjoys. Come browse, visit, eat, or just get out of the house with a friend. FIRE AND ICE GALA: The American Red Cross Eastern New York Region announces their signature Fire and Ice Gala will return to the Albany Capital Center on Saturday April 9, 2022.
Honorary Chairs are Ellen Sax, MVP Health Care’s Vice President of Community Engagement, and Benita Zhan DPS, MS, CHWC. The Fire and Ice Gala is the primary source of funding for the Eastern New York Region which serves more than 3.6 million residents. The region spans 27 counties and includes three chapters. Annually the region responds to over 680 local disasters, serves more than 2,300 local military families and collects more than 106,000 units of live saving blood. The Gala will feature fine wine and food, music and dancing, and outstanding live and silent auctions, which showcase one-of-a-kind items and experiences.
