Album Review: Full Bush – Movie Night

The perfect melding of grace and grit

Bringing the fire, Full Bush released their latest EP, Movie Night. The five-song EP features a full range of elements from a lovely sweetness to gothic darkness as well as thrashing chaos.

This four-piece punk group found its start in Philadelphia, PA. Together, they carry a strong combination of musical power released within each song. There is no bubble gum pop within this EP, as each song is creatively crafted with wit and style. There is organized chaos within the musicality that creates a beautiful balance of light and dark. Movie Night follows their self-titled debut album, Full Bush, released in 2018.

Kicking off the EP is their single “Spooky,” drawing in the attention with an enchanting high falsetto. Soon, this angelic moment clashes with a joining percussion, and from there, the song takes on a completely different atmosphere. The hook comes to life with a gritty guitar and crashing drums surrounded but a vast aromatic vocal.

Sugary and sweet, “ Sweet N Low” paints the picture of dysfunctional love. The lyrics ask, “Tell me how to love you/ tell me how to stay” with a sweetness within the vocals, yet the instrumentation plays as the perfect juxtaposition, creating the “Low” against the “Sweet.”

The title track, “Movie Night,” slams the listener right in the face for the first 10 seconds with crashing, thrashing music. As quickly as this aggression starts, that’s how fast it stops, but only for a moment. The verse is calm and serene, but the hook hits like a punch in the teeth, making this track really stand out from the rest of the record.

Closing the EP is “One Second,” harboring darkness that leaves the listener wanting more. The song is simple, with ambient rings of the electric guitar and metallic percussion taps behind glowing vocals. Again, like the rest of the EP, the hook comes in hard with a gritty attitude. This attitude begins to swell into the remainder of the song. All at once, the power building throughout culminates in a fit of screaming and thrashing elements up to the final second.

Full Bush really delivers a beautiful punch within their latest EP release, Movie Night. There are so many elements that dance gracefully together, bouncing from track to track across the entirety of the EP. Reaching the end of the EP will leave anyone asking for more and then reaching for the replay button.
