(LOOTPRESS) – Deliveries of West Virginia thermal coal to domestic utility plants increased from September to October by +16.4%.
Domestic thermal coal shipments from the NAPP region of the state increased by +19.9% month over month. Shipments of domestic thermal coal from the state’s CAPP region declined from September by -2.4%. Compared to the same 10 months of 2020, total year to date shipments of West Virginia domestic thermal coal are up +17.5%. +24.1% from the state’s NAPP region, while domestic thermal coal deliveries from the CAPP region of the state are off by -8.8% compared to last year.
Total shipments of thermal coal to U.S. power plants declined from September by -3.5%. Sub bituminous and lignite coal shipments decreased by -5.2% month over month. Deliveries of bituminous coal to U.S. power plants increased slightly by +0.3% from September. Compared to the same time in 2020, total shipments of thermal coal to U.S. power plants are +4.9% higher than last year. Sub bituminous and lignite deliveries are up +5.4% and bituminous coal shipments are up +4.7%.
Electric generation at West Virginia’s coal fired power plants decreased from September to October by -35.3% ***Total state electric consumption increased from September to October by 2.9% even though coal plant generation decreased, likely reflecting efforts to conserve and build coal stockpiles at in-state power plants.*** Year to date, electric generation from West Virginia coal plants is +22.6% higher than the same 10 months of 2020.
Total U.S. coal fired electric generation declined month over month by -20.6%. Year to date, total U.S. coal plant electric generation is +25.5% higher than the same 10 months of 2020.

Sub bituminous coal stockpiles at U.S. electric generating plants increased month over month by 2.4%. Stockpiles of bituminous coal increased by +9.9% from September to October. Compared to the same 10 months of 2020, average stockpiles of sub bituminous coal are -25% lower. Average stockpiles of bituminous coal are -29.5% lower than the same time last year.
Quantified as “days of burn”, stockpiles of sub bituminous coal increased by +2.4% (+2 days) and stockpiles of bituminous coal increased by +3.4% month over month (+3 days). Year to date, average sub bituminous coal days of burn are down -9.5% (-10.4 days). Average bituminous coal days of burn are off by -19.6% (-25.5 days).
