sony moves to mobility with vision-S 02 concept electric SUV at CES 2022

SONY VISION-S 02 debuts at CES 2022

following the unveiling of the sedan concept in 2020, sony surprises yet again at CES 2022 with the debut of a new concept car as well as entirely new mobility division, as the designs move to production. the electric car is an SUV prototype that looks to build upon the tech giant’s cutting edge technologies and design to bring new experiences in the automotive world, including autonomous driving, over-the-air updates and high personalization.

much like the 01 concept, the exterior design of the sony vision-S 02 represents the loop of light theme i.e. how light passes along different forms of the car, from the roofline to wingmirrors and door handles. a clearly defined division between the body and glasshouse seamlessly wraps around the entire vehicle. smooth curves and arcs sculpt the remaining form, most notably around the wheels and taillights.

the clean and large interior space, which offers seating variations of up to seven passengers, accommodates a variety of lifestyles. the dashboard’s panoramic screen stretches the entire width of the car and, like the individual rear-seat displays, plays high quality movies with a fully integrated video service. via remote connections, gaming on playstations can also be set up. seat speakers offer the final touch to the experience by creating a three-dimensional sound field for each passenger.

sony’s new levels of safety and comfort

the driver can intuitively interact with the vehicle’s sound system and human-machine interface using gestures and voice commands. what is called time-of-flight sensors monitor the driver for authentication and also the passengers. vehicle settings, key locks and user settings can then be synchronized to mobiles to deliver an even more personalized experience.

high tech is also used for the driving safety. its systems recognize and analyze the surrounding environment in real time with sensors installated 360-degrees around the car. the array of sensors include high-sensitivity, high-resolution, wide dynamic range CMOS image sensors and lidar sensors. from driving settings to entertainment options, over-the-air updates ensure the owner is kept up with the latest advancements.

road testing the sony concepts

the concept cars are closer to reality than you might expect. sony began testing its technology in the vision-S 01 concept in europe in december 2020. the autonomous capabilities then followed with 5G driving tests in april 2021. the latest development shows the importance of remote operation and driverless experiences in the near future.
