A local gardening club keeps making a community garden grow

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) One local gardening club has toiled the desert ground week after week for something beautiful to grow.

What once used to be a dirt lot has blossomed into a beautiful garden.

“It’s kind of like a hidden gem in our little desert town,” said LeAnn Bird, the Vice President of Moody Garden and Webmaster.

The Robert J. Moody demonstration garden was founded nearly 20-years ago.

The land was provided by the University of Arizona and Yuma county.

Moody Garden is a unique place that isn’t just pretty to look at but it’s a great way to learn about Yuma's plants, growing right in the heart of Yuma.

“You can look at all the different plant species and get to know what’s here, see how they grow, see what they look like,” said Bird.

The garden is almost 2 acres where locals can relax, walk around and admire the beauty of the plants.

Every Tuesday of the week the club has a volunteer day to make sure the garden is always well taken care of.

“To me it’s like a great way for you to find a stress relief. Your present in the moment, it’s positive energy, it’s good for your body and your mind,” said Moody Garden Volunteer Janice Sturgill.

The club is a non-profit where everything you see in the garden was either donated or earned by fundraising.

“It’s our job to make this garden beautiful for the community and to demonstrate on how best practices can be used. We want people to know that it’s opened to everyone,” said Bird.

Moody Garden Club is always looking for volunteers to help keep this garden alive.

The garden is located at 2200 West. 28th Street.

You can visit their website to learn more about the club and gardening.

The club is also always accepting donations.

You can visit the garden any time or you can also meet members of the Moody Garden club at the upcoming Home and Garden show on January 14th.
