Some exciting insight into EV buying habits in states where the uptake has been slow has been revealed.
And by slow, we mean slow compared to the likes of California. The west coast is by far the leader in terms of EV sales, accounting for nearly half of all-electric vehicles sold in the USA. Other states are slowly joining the party, but Automotive News uncovered an anomaly in Michigan.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is doing exceptionally well in the home of the American automotive industry. It seems the Ford name still means something over there, as Ford's share of the EV pie in Michigan is 20.8%.
Tesla is still far in the lead with a 43.5% market share in Michigan, but the one-in-five adoption rate should be concerning to the number one EV producer in America. There was a time when its market share was 100%, but as the legacy manufacturers caught up, that percentage shrunk.
What makes Michigan interesting is the big gap in market share compared to other states that are slowly adopting the EV lifestyle. But Ford is also gaining traction in four other states.
In North Dakota Ford has 14.4%, while Maine stands at 12.4%. Both these states are still dominated by Tesla, with 64.9% and 28.1%, respectively. South Dakota is fourth, where Ford has 12%, and Tesla has nearly 70%. Wisconsin is fifth, with Ford accounting for 10.5% of EV sales and Tesla taking home a 58.3% slice of the pie.
It seems like Michigan is still very much loyal to the industry that built the state.
Still, Tesla remains the one to beat, owning 69% of the EV market nationally. On a national level, Ford is sitting at 5.4%. It may seem like a small chunk, but not half bad, considering the Mach-E hasn't been available for that long and has been haunted by production issues since the first unit rolled off the line.
Currently, Ford manages to sell every Mach-E it makes and recently received a huge contract to supply New York City with police and emergency vehicles.
In addition to the above, Ford also opened a Mach-E factory in China to keep up with the demand in the East.
