Community Cook of the Month
Lori Stefanishion from Drumheller, Alberta
When Lori Stefanishion’s not busy traveling to Palm Springs for the winter or to her Lake Shuswap cabin for the summer, you can find her at home with her husband in the small village of Rosebud in Canada. A mother of three and grandmother of five, Lori loves cooking with the children in her family. When she’s not cooking, Lori enjoys many other hobbies, like crafts.
Lori’s favorite tradition with her grandchildren is doing a countdown to New Year’s with a craft, game or food every hour until the ball drops. She also enjoys hosting a “cook-off” every summer at her cabin and decorating pysanky Easter eggs with her relatives every spring.
Taste of Home:Â How did you learn to cook?
Lori Stefanishion:Â My mom was my inspiration. When I started loving to entertain, I just kept trying new recipes and interesting foods to serve.

TOH: What types of recipes are you known for?
LS:Â My friends call me the queen of “appy’s.” I like to do foods, especially appetizers, with themes and a great presentation that will “wow” them. Using my chocolate fountain for nacho cheese or gravy is always a hit!

TOH: What’s the next cooking skill you want to master?
LS: I’ve started getting into sous vide cooking. I would also like to experiment with a smoker someday.
TOH: What’s your favorite kitchen hack that you now live by?
LS: Preparation. I make a schedule and plan for any dinners or parties I host. I do as much ahead as possible, so there is time to enjoy the company and not be busy in the kitchen. I often freeze some of the foods well in advance. I also keep track of the foods I serve, so I don’t repeat them with the same guests.
