The 2022 Cadillac XT6 is a larger three-row midsize SUV than its smaller sibling, the Cadillac XT5. Both have plenty to like, but which luxury SUV is right for you? There aren’t many huge differences; even the price points are similar. Let’s compare these two Cadillac SUVs and determine which one is the better option.

2022 Cadillac XT5 vs. 2022 Cadillac XT6

A 2022 Cadillac XT6 midsize luxury SUV, is it better than the XT5?

Two luxury SUVs from the same automaker with different pros and cons. One is a three-row midsize, while the other sits somewhere between compact and midsize. Both are excellent options, and Cadillac hasn’t gone away just yet. Although Cadillac has fallen a bit behind the competition in recent years, its redesigned SUV lineup has plenty to offer.

The larger XT6 has a few different engine choices, and the third row of seats is always welcomed. Three-row SUVs have become paramount in the market since families need that extra space. Contrarily, the XT5, though smaller, provides a spacious cabin for passengers. Both SUVs offer a modern, comfortable design that’s good for anyone.

2022 Cadillac XT6 midsize SUV pros and cons: engines, AWD

Although the XT6 has a selection of engines, it could use more power. The base engine is the same turbocharged four-cylinder used in the XT5 and XT4. If you didn’t know already, it feels even less potent in a larger vehicle like the XT6. The optional 3.6-liter V6 makes 310 horsepower and is a step in the right direction. However, KBB notes that it pales compared to rivals, like the 400 horsepower base Lincoln Aviator.

Additionally, there is no hybrid option or any other powertrain configurations. Compared to the competition, it just falls short. Considering most other automakers are moving to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or even electric, the XT6’s gas mileage is less than desirable.

All-wheel drive is an essential feature for all SUVs. The XT6 comes with it as an option, so you’ll pay extra to gain traction and safety where it’s needed.

Cadillac XT5: engines pros and cons: engines, space, Sport trim

The base engine for the XT5 is also a turbocharged four-cylinder. Not only does the Sport model get the upgraded engine, but it also comes with all-wheel drive. The 3.6-liter V6 engine gets paired with a sportier suspension and stronger brakes in the Sport model as well, according to KBB. Every base model comes with front-wheel drive, but Luxury and Premium Luxury trim levels can upgrade to AWD.

KBB recommends the Sport model at the very least since the base model is a bit underwhelming. The starting price for the sportiest XT5 model is nearly $56,000, which gets it well above its base price of $43,995. Its biggest drawback against its larger brother is that it only has two rows of seats. The additional third row of seats is just what they need, so that’s a dealbreaker for many. However, the 2022 Cadillac XT5 provides plenty of interior space for those who can get away with only two rows.

Which luxury SUV is right for you?

If ample size is what you’re looking for, the XT6 is the right choice. Both Cadillac SUVs come with similar equipment, from technology to capability. Although the XT5 is more affordable, the recommended Sport model is much more expensive. Both SUVs come with tons of interior passenger and cargo space and the same engine choices. Thanks to the 2022 Cadillac XT5’s smaller stature, the V6 engine feels a bit zippier than in its big brother. The XT6 fails to impress performance-wise, and there are better luxury three-row midsize SUV options out there.

If you want something fun to drive with plenty of interior space (two rows are enough), then the Cadillac XT5 is the right choice. It’s difficult to recommend the XT6 when it costs so much and doesn’t outperform its competition, especially when that competition is its closest related relative.
