Marvel Was So Careful About HAWKEYE's Big Bad Villain Reveal They Even Kept It From the Crew

The MCU is all about secrecy and surprises, and though there are people out there that try to spoil movies and shows, most of us fans want to see the reveals for ourselves, and Marvel tried their best to make that happen. In the recent Hawkeye series that led us from Thanksgiving to Christmas, fans got a couple cool surprises that included the return of Black Widow’s sister, Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, as well as big, bad villain Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio.

D’Onofrio played Fisk in the Netflix Marvel series Daredevil, and fans were hoping he would be able to step back into the role someday, so this was a perfect surprise. But to keep it a surprise, the creators didn’t tell anyone, not even the crew.

The show’s costumer designer Michael Crow recently told Insider:

"I think in the original script it was scripted as another character. Like something from the [Matt] Fraction [Hawkeye] comic books, but not Kingpin. I started asking questions about what we wanted to do, how do we wanna approach it? And I got an immediate phone call back from Trinh Tran [Marvel Studios Producer]. And she just said: 'We'll talk about that a little bit later. We're not ready to talk about that yet, but it's not gonna be that [the character from the script]. It's a big secret.'"

After finally finding out about D'Onofrio's return as Wilson Fisk, Crow and his team had about two months to create his costumes, and the fittings were done remotely. Crow added:

"We did a lot of long-distance fittings because [D'Onofrio} was working on another show in New York at the time. I didn't see him until the very last minute and I mean, he is truly a lovely gentleman. A pleasure to work with."

As it turns out, fans were speculating quite a bit about D’Onofrio’s return, so it wasn’t a complete surprise, but it was still a lot of fun to see it happen. Now that Kingpin and Daredevil have returned, we just need to get Punisher back!
