Veteran restauranteur Willie Degel is advocating for customers to be able to designate tips for the kitchen staff, a move he says would help the embattled restaurant industry.

Food Network veteran and celebrated restauranteur Willie Degel thinks he knows the way to solve the staffing issues affecting the hospitality industry.

The New York native, who owns four restaurants in Georgia, including three in Gwinnett County, said he thinks a tip for the kitchen could go a long way toward attracting employees back to restaurants and establishing some stability in what has always been a fluid employment scenario.

I would advocate paying staff a living wage so that they are not reliant on the whims of the diner. Pay staff enough upfront so that tips would not be necessary and they have a steady wage not something that fluctuates week to week. That might help with all the hiring issues we hear about in the food service industry.
