Is the 2022 Subaru Outback as good as its awards say it is? The Outback keeps racking up awards and gets another from Car Connection's Best Car To Buy awards. The award is the third recognition the Outback has received in as many months. The Subaru Outback is their best wagon to buy in 2022.

Car Connection says, "The Subaru Outback hits that sweet spot for buyers with all-around capability, spacious interior, spotless safety record, and this year, a new lifted Wilderness version. If an automobile were a hiking boot, it would be the Outback."

In November, Consumer Reports picked the 2022 Outback as one of the best SUV-alternative vehicles and rates it number one of thirteen Midsize sport-utility vehicles.

The 2022 Outback gets a new Wilderness trim level

In December, GearJunkie says the 2022 Outback is one of the nine best adventure vehicles you can buy. They said the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the best wagon, and they call it the "Swiss Army knife of cars."

Also, in December, two separate studies ranked the 2022 Outback as one of the best all-wheel-drive cars and SUVs for ice and snow this winter. A recent report from AutoGuide and another from iSeeCars ranked the Outback as an ideal vehicle for driving in severe winter conditions.

The 2022 Outback gets the top safety scores

The 2022 Subaru Outback earns the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Consumer Reports says, "All Outback versions get the EyeSight safety technology with standard forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection; the blind-spot warning is optional."

What is the fuel mileage of the 2022 Outback?

The EPA fuel mileage rating of the 2022 Outback XT 2.4-liter turbo is 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg. The estimated fuel economy of the standard 2.5-liter engine is 26/33 mpg city/highway and 29 combined mpg.

The EPA says the new 2022 Outback Wilderness gets an estimated 22/26 city/highway mpg and 24 combined mpg. The 2021 Outback XT with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets an EPA estimated 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Outback?

The 2022 Outback comes in eight trim levels; the base trim is priced from $27,845, Premium ($30,270), Limited ($34,720), Touring ($38,620), Onyx Edition XT ($36,270), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,120), Limited XT ($39,120), and Touring XT ($41,070). Pricing includes $1,125 destination and delivery fees.

What is coming for the 2023 Outback?

The 2023 Outback, in the fourth year of their life cycle, will get a refresh. Subaru typically gives its models a refresh with a new front fascia outside (headlights, bumper, hexagon grille), unique interior upgrades with fabric changes inside, and a new exterior color.
