Bristol Palin pregnancy prevention PSA: 'What if I didn't come from a famous family?'

First, she had a baby. Then, she was appointed ambassador of the Candie's Foundation, an organization that seeks to prevent teen pregnancy. Two months ago she landed a role — as herself — in ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager. And now, Bristol Palin is starring in a pregnancy prevention PSA.

Palin has firmly established herself as an icon for pregnancy prevention, further ensuring that she'll forever be labeled as Sarah Palin's teen-mom daughter. (On second thought, good on her for taking ownership of the title, since she would have been labeled as such regardless.)

Is she an effective icon for teens? Much ado is being made over this particular PSA, which sort of implies that wealthy teens can get pregnant with few consequences: "What if I didn't come from a famous family? What if I didn't have their support? What if i I didn't have all these opportunities? Believe me, it wouldn't be pretty." I choose to think Palin had good intentions with this PSA: Since we live in an era in which the Jamie Lynn Spears-es of the world appear to handle teen pregnancy without a hitch, there's nothing wrong with reminding young men and women that Palin's situation — which includes travel opportunities, television appearances, and considerable wealth — is not the norm. Reminding them it's not glamorous…well, maybe she fell a little short there.
