A United States Customs and Border Protection agent was shot at from Mexico on New Year’s Day while arresting an illegal immigrant in Texas.

Fox News reported that multiple bullets struck the agent’s vehicle, but the agent himself was not harmed. Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin tweeted photos of the bullet holes in the agent’s truck.

“NEW: A Border Patrol agent was shot at from across the river in Mexico on New Year’s Day while he was apprehending a migrant who had crossed illegally near Roma, TX. Bullets hit agents vehicle, but he wasn’t hurt,” Melugin tweeted. “CBP and FBI now investigating. Pics from LE source. @FoxNews.”

The incident took place near Roma with the gunfire coming from across the Rio Grande River in Mexico. The CBP agent did not return fire.

It isn’t the first time agents in Roma have been fired at from across the southern border. Melugin previously reported that the city is one of the busiest places at the US-Mexico border for illegal immigration and cartel activity.

In October, suspected Mexican cartel members fired several rounds across the US-Mexico border, according to Melugin, who captured the gunfire on video while embedded with the Texas National Guard in Roma, Texas.

“NEW: ‘Holy sh*t!’ We witnessed tracer rounds from a suspected cartel machine gun being fired from Mexico into the U.S. early this morning while we were embedded with the TX National Guard in Roma, TX. Soldiers tell us the rounds went above one of their observation posts. @FoxNews,” Melugin posted on Twitter along with footage of the moment.

Melugin called the gunfire “remarkable” at the time, noting that the National Guard troops didn’t know if it was a cartel shootout or an intimidation effort.

“The National Guard here has soldiers all over the place, as well as observation posts all over the place,” Melugin said. “They’re keeping an eye out for runners and human smugglers.”

Melugin also reported that over 2,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in the Del Rio sector over the New Years’ holiday weekend.

“The New Year begins w/ 2,200 illegal immigrants apprehended in Del Rio sector alone this past weekend, & a Border Patrol agent being shot at from the Mexican side of the river in the RGV, leaving bullet holes in his vehicle,” he tweeted. “2022 picking up right where 2021 left off at the border.”
