Princess Eugenie celebrated her first year as a mom, reflecting on all the people and things she’s grateful for as 2021 comes to a close.

On Instagram on Friday, the royal posted a carousel of candid family photos, including many of her husband Jack Brooksbank and their newborn son, August Philip Hawke, as well as a moving shot of her grandmother Queen Elizabeth enjoying a sunny day in the countryside with her late husband, Prince Philip. “Happy New Year to all.. Goodbye 2021,” Eugenie wrote in the caption. “A year that blessed us with our boy and saw our family grow with new additions but also a year that took some of our biggest and brightest lights. Forever in our hearts.” The princess gave birth to her first child in early February at London’s Portland Hospital, where Meghan Markle gave birth to her son Archie and where Eugenie was born. To celebrate her birthday in March, Eugenie shared a photo of August on her Instagram, writing that the baby is “the best present I could ask for!!”

August is eleventh in line to the throne, the first grandchild for the Duke and Duchess of York, and Queen Elizabeth’s ninth great-grandchild. The pair chose the middle name Philip in honor of Eugenie’s late grandfather. Sources told Vanity Fair in 2020 that while Eugenie is technically bestowed with the title of “Her Royal Highness” through her birthright, she doesn’t want any titles for her children so that they can grow up to live a more “ordinary life.” The source explained, “Eugenie knows that a title can be a curse as well as a blessing and she and Jack want their child to live an ordinary life and eventually work to earn a living.”

While Eugenie and Brooksbank have much to celebrate, this has also been a difficult year for the couple as both lost close family members. This is the first holiday season Eugenie has spent without her grandfather who died in April at age 99, and her husband also lost his father, George Brooksbank, in late November just days before their son’s christening. George had “been ill for some time” after contracting the coronavirus last year, according to The Press Association.
