Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street will air a major story for Emma Brooker and Faye Windass this year that will see them face "potentially really serious life-changing consequences" after they're involved in a car accident.

When learner driver Faye (Ellie Leach) picks up a still-tipsy Emma (Alexandra Mardell) from a New Year's Eve party, things take a turn for the worse when they knock over an elderly man named Ted.

Corrie producer Iain MacLeod has told Digital Spy and other media during a 2022 storyline preview that this incident will have major consequences for the pair, saying that 2022 "really couldn't get off to a much worse start" for Faye and Emma.

"They're on their way back to Weatherfield after New Year's Eve and there's a terrible, cataclysmic event that happens," he revealed. "It's certainly not their fault, but it puts them into this total nightmare of impossible dilemmas, secrecy and cover-ups.

"It's a story of two really likeable, decent young women who suddenly find themselves miles out of their depth with potentially really serious life-changing consequences.

"It's a great story featuring two really great actors. The scripts are in the best Coronation Street tradition – exciting and complicated, but also quite funny. I can't imagine a much more hapless person to find themselves in the middle of a catastrophe than Emma.

"In places it's really funny, characterful and quirky. But the bottom of it all, it's something that will trigger a seismic shift in both of their lives going into 2022."

The trouble begins for Faye and Emma when they hit Ted with their car. Thankfully, the elderly man appears to be fine after the accident. He even gets up following the incident and invites Faye and Emma into his flat for a cup of tea.

Unfortunately, while the pair do their best to make the situation right, it seems that returning Ted home might not be the end of their worries after all – particularly as Imran Habeeb (Charlie De Melo) sees Faye and Emma arrive home and points out that Emma shouldn't have been supervising a learner driver while under the influence of alcohol.

"They take him home, they've made him comfortable and he's fine. When you watch it, I think what you'll feel is that all of the decisions they make are totally in keeping with the decisions that you or I might make," MacLeod said.

"But unfortunately, when you add them all up, it just turns into a total nightmare. Suddenly, when things take a turn for the worse, they realise there's already a number of witnesses like Imran, who can actually incriminate them."

Iain MacLeod went on to call it "an interesting story because it's a case of waking up in the morning and everything looks normal, but then by the time the sun sets, your life is upside down and you're facing really serious legal ramifications potentially".

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm on ITV.
