The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Switch.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

XSX|S Vs. Switch Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 403,361 - XS

Gap change over last 12 months: 5,433,088 - NS

Total Lead: 6,049,894 - NS

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 9,798,177

Switch Total Sales: 15,848,071

November 2021 is the 13th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Switch by 403,361 units. The Nintendo Switch is currently ahead by 6.05 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 9.80 million units in nine months, while the Nintendo Switch sold 15.85 million units. Month 13 for the Xbox Series X|S is November 2021 and for the Nintendo Switch it is March 2018.

The Nintendo Switch crossed 20 million units sold in month 19, 30 million in month 23, and 40 million in month 33. The Nintendo Switch has sold 96.97 million units through November 2021.

If we calculate an exponential gap change growth based on the last two months it becomes obvious that the XBS will outsell the Switch by next year. My uncle who works at Microsoft told me that.

It's not a fair comparison as the Switch wasn't supply constrained for as long as the Xbox Series consoles have been (13.7 months and counting). So not a fair comparison, but nonetheless an interesting comparison. :)

How do you mean? Nintendo wasn't facing an intense industry-wide chip shortage, so was able to scale up with less competition for components.
