Baseball Hall of Fame 2022: How Alex Rodriguez, Curt Schilling, all 30 candidates fare after 110 votes

Yankees great Alex Rodriguez (clockwise from top left) is on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, while Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are making their 10th and final appearance.

Alex Rodriguez, welcome to baseball’s club of ill repute, the one reserved for retired superstars who get passed over for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame due to performance enhancing drugs ties.

The 2022 ballot includes A-Rod for the first time, and the Yankees great joins three other very prominent suspected or busted cheaters who have one final shot to be voted in by baseball writers — Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa.

Early voting results, tabulated once again by Hall of Fame tracker Ryan Thibodaux, spell bad news for A-Rod, who has received only 51 votes among 110 revealed ballots through Dec. 31. His 46.4% falls far short of the 75% needed for election.

Bonds and Clemens, close calls in the 2021 vote, are a few percentage points above the 75% threshold again (at 80%), but they traditionally fall a few points when the final tabulations are counted.

Based on early voting, the best bet to get in among 30 candidates is Red Sox great David Ortiz, who is at 82.7%. Big Papi has steroids ties, too, but he’s vehemently pleaded his innocence since being named in the 2003 Mitchell Report for testing positive for PEDs. MLB has since stated that there were false positives in that report, which was conducted prior to baseball outlawing PEDs.

2022 is also the 10th and last time on the ballot for controversial pitcher Curt Schilling, who received at least 70% of the vote the last two seasons. He badmouthed writers again after falling short last year, and it’s showing in the early voting, as he’s close to 60%. Scott Rolen, who played with Schilling in Philadelphia, has gained a lot more support over the last three years and is at 72.7% and has a shot to get in this year.

Besides A-Rod, 10 first-time candidates includes former Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who likely won’t come close to getting even the 5% of the vote needed to remain on the ballot next year.

Anyone elected will be inducted on July 24 in Cooperstown, N.Y., along with the six recent Golden Era Committee electees — former Yankees pitcher Jim Kaat, Gil Hodges, Tony Oliva, Minnie Minoso, Buck O’Neil and Bud Fowler.

Here are early voting results for all 30 candidates through 110 of the estimated 392 votes via bbhoftracker.com:
