EVANSVILLE -- The man accused in a fatal shooting on Oregon Street earlier this week has been arrested, police said Thursday evening.

Fabian L. Bennett, 30, was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail on a charge of murder after Evansville police worked with U.S. Marshals to take him into custody, EPD stated in a news release.

Police named Bennett as a suspect in the shooting death of 43-year-old Carlis J. Falls. The shooting was reported around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Oregon Street. Police reportedly found Falls lying in the road near a vehicle and performed CPR until medics transported him to the hospital, where he later died.

Two contractors working for Falls reportedly told police the gunman shot Falls as he "attempted to retreat to his vehicle."

On Wednesday morning, police issued an updated news release saying a warrant had been issued for Bennett's arrest.

In the early 2000s, Falls was a running back for the Evansville Vipers, a now-defunct semi-professional football team.
