Deontay Wilder slammed for lacking ‘in a lot of areas’ as rival Charles Martin calls Tyson Fury’s conqueror out

CHARLES MARTIN has called out Deontay Wilder and claimed the former WBC heavyweight champion is lacking ‘in a lot of areas’.

The American heavyweights twice held talks about getting it on inside the ring during 2020.

But those were ended when the Bronze Bomber won an arbitration case which secured his trilogy clash against Tyson Fury.

The 36-year-old was beaten by the Gypsy King and has since hinted at retirement.

Meanwhile Martin will face Luis Ortiz on January 1 in an IBF eliminator instead as he vies to get into the world title picture.

Ahead of that, Martin spoke to Sky Sports about that potential showdown with Wilder and insists he was confident of victory due to the former champ lacking a number of skills.

Martin, 35, said: “It would have been a great opportunity.

“I always knew there was a possibility that things wouldn't go in my favour, but I had still prepared myself mentally.

“I was able to treat it like a championship fight. I gave 100 per cent effort even knowing there was a possibility it could fall through.”

Martin added: “He lacks in a lot of areas. I am pretty difficult to hit. You can't hit me flush because I never just come in [straight]. I am always strategic.”

Martin was also recently in talks to face another ex-world champ in Andy Ruiz Jr.

But that potential showdown was scuppered when the Mexican was forced to undergo knee surgery.

The veteran’s last outing resulted in a one-punch knockout of former world title challenger Gerald Washington.
