Russell Wilson ‘definitely surprised’ by Seahawks’ abysmal season

No one is more surprised about the Seahawks’ season going off the rails than quarterback Russell Wilson.

After the Seahawks dropped their 11th game this season, a 25-24 loss to the Bears, Wilson told reporters that he’s “definitely surprised” the year has gone awry, as an offseason full of questions — about the quarterback’s future, specifically — linger.

“I feel like we could have at least had a few more wins early on and then throughout the process, and it’s been a challenge along the way, but I think that you have to take each game and each moment — this is what I’ve always believed, win or loss,” Wilson said.

“I think that everybody is trying to put the work in every day, and that’s the thing that is disappointing, too. Every guy is putting everything they have into it, and I think that’s where we want to be better.

“It’s, like, man, where can we find these little moments? Any time you play in the National Football League, the difference of winning and losing are these little moments where we can be cleaner and be disciplined and make those things happen and find ways to make the plays,” he later added.

Wilson threw for 181 yards on Sunday with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Although Wilson said he “can be cleaner and just try to be better,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll put the loss on himself.

“I feel like I have to do more. In a time like this, I feel like I’ve got to find ways to help our guys more so that we don’t get in a situation where we even give them a chance,” Caroll said.

The Seahawks (5-10) have two more games this season, but much of the NFL community is already focused on what will happen with Wilson this offseason. The 33-year-old quarterback, who has spent his entire career in Seattle, has been repeatedly linked to the Giants, another team also grappling with a disaster of a year.

When asked earlier this month about a report tying him to New York, Wilson responded: “That’s not in my head right now at all. I didn’t say that. I’m focused on what we’re doing here. Obviously I love Seattle. This is a place that I’ve loved every day, every moment.”

Although the Giants are expected to bring back head coach Joe Judge and quarterback Daniel Jones for 2022, it remains to be seen if a Super Bowl champ-sized wrench will be thrown into those plans.
