Video: Michigan Reps. Debbie Dingell and Fred Upton regret 'what's happening in our country'

It's an apt time of year for "remembering how much we have in common," Rep. Debbie Dingell says Sunday, sitting alongside a Michigan colleague from across the political aisle. "I want the American people to think about what's happening in our country," the Dearborn Democrat adds.

Rep. Fred Upton of St. Joseph, her fellow guest on CNN's "State of the Union" (video below), acknowledges that members of his Republican Party in 2021 contributed to making Washington "a pretty toxic place. I've never seen anything like this before."

Six days after violent protesters occupied Congress in January, Upton was among 10 House Republicans voting to impeach Donald Trump for "incitement of insurrection" -- a historic roll call that split 223-205 against impeachment. "It was a scary day," Upton recalled of Jan. 6. "It was real and shocking."

During their 12-minute joint appearance, each lawmaker said threatening voicemails are common on their office lines. "I want the American people to think about what's happening in our country -- that this kind of hate, this fear is happening in communities across the country," said Dingell, who provided a recorded example.

Their respect and friendship is a model for bipartisan unity in Washington, the pair suggest. "I can have very strong disagreements even with Fred over some policies," Dingell said before Upton jumped in to add: "But I'll always make her laugh at the end."
