Shinji Kagawa’s time in Greece has come to an end, with the former Borussia Dortmund star leaving PAOK Thessaloniki by mutual consent.

Shinji Kagawa hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2019. After failing to make his mark in Spain with Real Zaragoza, the former Japanese international joined Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki in January 2021. But less than 12 months later, he has terminated his contract with the Greek Super League side.

Kagawa leaves PAOK having made just 12 appearances for the club. He fell out of favour at the start of the season, and his last appearance for PAOK came all the way back in September. In a statement on Instagram, the 32 year old apologised to the PAOK supporters and thanked them for their support.

Kagawa enjoyed a storied career with Borussia Dortmund and helped the Black and Yellows win two Bundesliga titles before joining Manchester United in 2012. He then returned to Dortmund two years later and helped the club win the DFB-Pokal during the 2016/17 season. The attacking midfielder made a total of 216 appearances across two spells for BVB, scoring 60 goals.

Kagawa then spent six months on loan with Besiktas, before joining Real Zaragoza on a permanent transfer. He left the Spanish side by mutual consent last year, and now leaves PAOK six months before his contract was due to expire.

It remains to be seen what Kagawa’s plans are for the future. But all Borussia Dortmund fans will certainly be pulling for him to be successful no matter what he does. He will always remain a fan favourite and a club legend at the Signal Iduna Park.
