Does the 5a work well on Verizon? I heard on reddit that many people are having issues sending and receiving texts.
I bought an unlocked 5a from the Google Store and had Verizon install a 5G sim card. I have had zero problems with either texts or phone calls on Verizon.

I was unable to get my Pixel 5a to be activated on VZW due to an IMEI error that seems to occur frequently as reported multiple places on internet. Seems to be hit or miss. I attempted two different times in two different locations, one corporate and one dealer. No success with either.

Is the device from Verizon?

What is a 5g Sim? I'm using the same Sim I got from Verizon years ago when I bought an iPhone xr. Currently using an S20 FE and I get 5G just fine.

I was planning to install my sim card from my 2017 Pixel 2Xl into my new 5a. I called Verizon for instructions on how to do this and they told me my 2XL's sim card was not a 5G sim card and I needed a new 5G sim card. I went to a Verizon store and they installed a 5G sim card in my 5a and transferred my phone number from my 2XL at the same time. I never tried my 2XL's old sim card in my new 5a as I assumed it would not have worked.

Sorry for the delayed response. The 5a is only sold unlocked through Google Store or through Google Fi in a similar manner. I bought my 5a through a Google Fi promotion. From what I’ve read, the Google Fi version range of IMEIs may be a problem for VZW activations. I use the eSIM for my Google Fi account line. For the the physical SIM, I’ve used AT&T or T-Mobile account line physical SIM without problem interchangeably.

My carrier is Verizon and I'm having a problem with SMS on my 5a. I can send text messages but not receive any. I bought this phone from Google and installed the Verizon SIM card that was in my 4a. Never even considered that the SIM wouldn't be compatible.

Was that a mistake?

Maybe I need to get to the Verizon store and get a new card?

I ran through the "My Verizon" Troubleshooting/checklist and didn't find much that worked to solve the issues. Then I made an appointment to go to the local official Verizon store.
Suddenly (!) SMS starts working (Figure that out!)
Bluetooth is still not working correctly tho. I did send the App developer an email so maybe I'll get an update started. 'Can hope, but not holding my breath!

You can try new card to rule it out

The problem is the 5a is a non CDMA phone. You have to work through the first level phone tech and get to a 2nd level tech that knows how to configure a CDMA less phone on Verizons network. Once they do that, all is good. ANY 4GLTE card will get you nation wide 5G on Verizons network. Being the 5a doesn't have the MMwave 5G modem, that's the only thing you'll be missing. And unless you live right underneath one of those antennas, it won't do you any good any way.

This chart is from Verizon's website. You have to dig to find it, but it is there.

Thanks for the chart. It explains a lot. And your explanation regarding activation is spot on. Most mid to high end phones in the last 2-3 years have all the hardware needed to work on VZ. The problem is getting it activated/configured, if the phone is not on the "official" VZ list. Definitely need 2nd or 3rd level support to make it happen.

I just chat with them and told them I needed a SIM for a pixel 5a that's provisioned for a CDMA less phone. Got it a few days later, put it in and perfect since.

Seems like nobody is using the eSIM you can simply download from Verizon. Anybody want to weigh in on why this seems to be the case?

Not sure but think when I asked them about that they said not for this phone. Again, I don't remember.
