Ilya Borodin, Yu Yiting, Claire Curzan Set World Junior Records in Abu Dhabi

Ilya Borodin, Yu Yiting, Claire Curzan Set World Junior Records in Abu Dhabi

Three world junior records were set during the fifth evening of finals at the Short Course World Championships, with two of the three swimmers earning individual silver medals for their efforts while the other qualified second for her own final. The record-setters were China’s Yu Yiting in the women’s 200 IM, the USA’s Claire Curzan in the women’s 100 butterfly and Russia’s Ilya Borodin in the men’s 400 IM.

Yu took silver in the women’s 200 IM in 2:04.48, just 0.19 behind Canadian gold medalist Sydney Pickrem. In the process, 0.16 off the world junior record of 2:04.64 set by Canada’s Kayla Sanchez in 2018. Yu also broke the Chinese national record of 2:04.64 set by Ye Shiwen back in 2012, and she moved to seventh all-time in the event.

In the women’s 100 fly semifinals, Curzan qualified second behind Canada’s Maggie MacNeil in 55.64. Curzan, the bronze medalist in the 50 fly Sunday for her first individual medal at a senior international meet, tied the world junior record set by Belarus’ Anastasiya Shkurdai last year. Curzan and Shkurdai are now tied for 17th all-time in the 100 fly.

Finally, the Russian Swimming Federation’s Ilya Borodin swam a 3:56.47 to secure silver in the men’s 400 IM. Borodin was the long course European champion in this event earlier this year, but he missed the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 shortly before the Games. Here, Borodin finished hard to nearly catch gold medalist Daiya Seto, and he crushed Seto’s world junior record of 3:59.15. Borodin also moved to third all-time in the event behind Seto and Ryan Lochte.
