Chicago White Sox: Jimmy Cordero has a new MLB home

The Chicago White Sox had a decent bullpen in 2021. It never really reached that full potential that we thought it had going into the year but they were really good. Liam Hendriks was the best reliever in the American League and guys like Michael Kopech, Craig Kimbrel, Aaron Bummer, and Garrett Crochet mostly did a good job to get to him.

One player who didn’t contribute much this year was Jimmy Cordero. He missed the entire season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He had the surgery in March so it is unclear when he will be ready for Major League Baseball action again.

However, we do know what team that would be with as he signed a deal with the New York Yankees. Major League Baseball is currently in a lockout but his deal is a Minor League one so it was allowed because that league has labor peace as of right now.

Cordero is a pitcher that could be considered hit or miss. Rick Renteria used him way too much in 2020 and it shouldn’t be at all shocking that he needed Tommy John surgery. In the short 60 game season that had no spring training to prepare him for the season, Cordero made 30 appearances.

Playing in half the games would probably mean that the coach uses him because he’s awesome. Right? Wrong. He did not have that good of a year at all as he had a 6.08 ERA and a 1.575 WHIP. He also didn’t even have an inning per appearance as he only threw in 26.2.

Now, the Yankees are taking a flier on him as he comes back from this struggle. If they use him the right way, they might be able to bring him back and see him have success. He showed that he can be good with the White Sox in 2019 and the Yankees are hoping to see some of that. It was nice to see him land on his feet with another organization in the league.

Getting some minor league appearances under his belt will probably be how he starts off and then the Yankees should bring him up. They could use some pitching help and Cordero could be someone who randomly provides that.
