Kristie Mewis and Jasmyne Spencer selected in NWSL Expansion Draft

NWSL: National Women’s Soccer League-North Carolina Courage at Houston Dash Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Dash lost midfielder Kristie Mewis to San Diego Wave FC and Jasmyne Spencer to Angel City FC in this evening’s NWSL Expansion Draft.

Mewis, 30, was traded to the Dash in 2017 and made 54 appearance for Houston. The US international scored 9 goals and added 7 assists during her time with the Dash. Mewis saw a bit of a career revitalization in Houston and got back in to the United States Women’s National Team picture. She has 33 caps for the USWNT, with 4 goals and 4 assists. Her presence in the midfield will definitely be missed in Houston.

Mewis was then traded to NJ/NY Gotham FC from San Diego, in exchange for $200K in allocation money.

Forward Jasmyne Spencer was also selected in the NWSL Expansion Draft. Spencer came to Houston in May after a trade with OL Reign. The New York native made 18 appearances for the Dash and scored 1 goal.

Abby Dahlkemper, who finished the 2021 NWSL season with the Dash after returning stateside from Manchester City, was traded by North Carolina Courage (who still had her NWSL rights) to San Diego last month. Dahlkemper became San Diego’s first signing after playing 8 games with Houston last season.
