Officials rescued a group of hunters from the Snake River after their boat capsized, leaving them stranded.
Two adults and three children were out hunting when their boat overturned near Smith’s Island, a unit of the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. The water was a cold 45 degrees, and they were surrounded by steep banks and a fast-flowing river.
The hunters managed to swim to a small island in the river.
Ray Portwood with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and Sheriff's Deputy Sergeant Jason Roberts were patrolling the river when they got word of a search and rescue operation for the hunters.
Portwood and Roberts searched the river before finding the hunters on the bank. Three children and one of the adults were helped into the boat, all soaked and cold. The other adult was rescued a short time later.
“I’m glad we were on our regular patrol with our partners from Canyon County at the time and were able to quickly reach the people,” Portwood said. “It is amazing that someone didn't drown in the fast running cold water. This serves as a sobering reminder to follow all boating regulations and not overload your boat. This could have been a tragedy for several families.”
