TAMPA — A 49-year-old Valrico man died when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle while riding an electric skateboard in a bicycle lane, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The collision occurred about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday on East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, also known as State Road 574, near Coconut Palm Drive. Along that stretch, the state road is a six-lane divided highway flanked by office parks.
A Tampa woman, 19, was headed east on Martin Luther King in a Jeep Renegade when the Valrico man, also headed east, veered from the bicycle lane and entered her path, the Highway Patrol said. It was unclear why he left the bicycle lane.
The man died at the scene of the crash.
The Highway Patrol did not release the name of the man or woman.
