LAS CRUCES -  The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a passerby discovered a man with severe injuries off Interstate 10 near Mesquite.

Sheriff Kim Stewart said a man in his 30s was alive when he was discovered about 10 a.m. Sunday. Stewart said he was flown to an El Paso hospital. On Tuesday, Stewart confirmed the man's identity as 33-year-old Joseph Gonzalez of Las Cruces.

The man was discovered in the same general area as Caroline Frances Cherry, 34. Cherry was found dead in October in an area off I-10 commonly called "the quarry." At the time, deputies said Cherry's death was not accidental and was not suicide.

However, Stewart said the two incidents do not appear to be related despite the coincidence of location.
