No division in boxing has seen the injection of talent and entertainment like the lightweight division. Kieran Mulvaney has dubbed it the time of the “four princes”, but Vasyl Lomachenko may in fact be the king without a crown after tonight.

Vasyl Lomachenko Returns to Pound-for-Pound Form

From the opening bell of round one, Vasyl Lomachenko fought like a man possessed and a man looking to get his belts back. After the Teofimo Lopez loss last year, everyone was wondering what it would do to him.

Early one he was Lomachenko was toying with his opponent Richard Commey, piecing the Ghanian up with overwhelming combinations and the best footwork in boxing today. Ever the showman, Lomachenko isn’t just a great boxer but he is also always looking to keep the fans and media entertained and he showed to end one of the early rounds.

It would be rinse and repeat for Vasyl Lomachenko and the striking output he was producing on Commey was just overwhelming him. Known for his toughness, Commey took a ton of punishment in the middle rounds and at times it seemed like he was going down but his heart continued to show and he would make it to the final bell each time.

Lomachenko was starting to see enough, though, and at one point asked his corner to step up and do the right thing after a beautiful left hand that he landed on the way in feinting a clinch.

Somehow, Commey would be let on to go by ringside doctors, in New York it is especially shocking they didn’t stop it. His corner did him no favors either, as their fighter was clearly not in the fight and they could have stopped so much punishment.

Instead, Vasyl Lomechenko worked Richard Commey for 36 minutes and now has his site set on getting his belts back. There are so many fun matchups on the horizon in the lightweight division. While fans likely will not see him against Gervonta Davis anytime soon, they may get a matchup with recent underdog-turned spoiler George Kambosos or maybe a matchup with United States Olympian Shakur Stevenson
