Knights Come Up Just Short Against 25th-Ranked St. John Fisher

Rochester, NY – Putting a scare into the 25th-ranked team in the country, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team enjoyed its best effort of the season against nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College, but it wasn't quite enough as the Golden Knights fell 66-63 on Friday evening to close out the first semester's games.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-8 on the year, while St. John Fisher improved to 7-0. Clarkson is off until 2022, when the team will host Plattsburgh State on January 3rd at Alumni Gymnasium.

In many of the Knights' first seven games of the season, Clarkson has started off slow and had to work its way back from early deficits. That wasn't the case on Friday, as Mariah Benavides and Ruthie Nolan hit early 3-pointers to put Clarkson up by five in the first four minutes. St. John Fisher recovered and gained the lead thanks to an 8-0 run, but baskets from Elaina Porter helped the Knights retake the lead twice, leading 15-13 at the 4:42 mark after a jumper. St. John Fisher went on another run, outscoring Clarkson 10-2 over the final four minutes of the quarter.

The Knights would not go away in the second period either, thanks to an 8-for-10 effort from the free throw line. St. John Fisher extended its lead to as many as eight, but Clarkson again recovered and cut the margin to two, which appeared to be the gap at the half when Ruthie Nolan hit a 3-pointer late in the period. However, a basket in the waning seconds allowed the Cardinals to take a four-point advantage into the locker room.

Though Clarkson took better care of the basketball in the third quarter than it did in the early going, the Knights struggled on offense after the break, shooting 4-for-16 and going to the line just once. Conversely, St. John Fisher went to the interior to take control of the game, making its first five attempts from inside the arc and also going 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the third. The Cardinals only misses in the period were from the 3-point line until three second remained in the third, as the team missed all six of its attempts from deep.

It looked like the Cardinals might pull away in the fourth as St. John Fisher extended its lead to as many as 15 just two minutes into the final quarter, but a Ruthie Nolan 3-pointer halted the run and restarted the Knights' offense. A layup from Nolan with just under five minutes to go put Clarkson within single digits, and a Cassidy Dumont lay in and free throw at the 4:01 mark had Clarkson down by just five. A minute later, Maddie Pratt converted inside, and with a little over two minutes remaining, Ruthie Nolan hit a 3-pointer from the wing to tie the game at 63-63.

With just under a minute remaining, St. John Fisher got a foul call in the final seconds of its possession and Miranda Lynch hit a pair of free throws to put St. John Fisher back on top. Clarkson's shot at the other end was blocked and after a few fouls, the Cardinals were sent back to the free throw line, where Claire Kruszka converted the first of two. On Clarkson's next possession, the Knights couldn't get open near the perimeter and turned the ball over in the last moment to fall by three.

Ruthie Nolan led the Knights with 18 points, shooting 5-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, while also adding in seven rebounds. Elaina Porter chipped in 14 points while both Maddie Pratt and Cassidy Dumont ended in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Kaitlyn Walker led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor, and also added 10 rebounds for the Cardinals. Claire Kruszka also scored 14 points and Miranda Lynch tossed in 11 points.
