News of Tyra's resignation comes the same day that Neeli Bendapudi became the new president at Penn State University.

In what has been speculated for days, Vince Tyra, the University of Louisville's director of athletics, has submitted his letter of resignation.

Tyra's resignation is effective Wednesday, Dec. 8, UofL spokesman John Karman confirmed in an email.

Also on Wednesday, UofL's board of trustees adjusted Tyra's contract, letting him out of his non-compete clause.

News of Tyra's resignation came the same day that Neeli Bendapudi was named the new president of Penn State University on Thursday.

UofL has not named an interim replacement for Tyra.

Tyra is a Louisville native and signed a five-year contract with UofL in 2018. He stepped into the AD role after the ouster of Tom Jurich, who was fired by U of L in October 2017 amid an FBI investigation into college basketball fraud. The school later paid out a multimillion dollar settlement.

Tyra was rumored to be the leading candidate for the Florida State University AD job, but the school tabbed Michael Alford for that role on Thursday, according to ESPN and other media outlets.

Tyra had an annual salary of $858,500 in 2021, according to Louisville Business First's list of the highest-paid University of Louisville, ranking him No. 6 on the list, right after Bendapudi. You can see the full list below.
