Thundercat Storms to No. 1, Alan Walker Bows on Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart
Plus, moves for Pitbull & Diplo.
Thundercat bursts back onto Billboard‘s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (dated Dec. 11) at No. 1 with The Golden Age of Apocalypse. The set, Thundercat’s 2011 debut co-produced by Flying Lotus, earned 4,000 equivalent album units, nearly all from physical sales, in the tracking week ending Dec. 2, according to MRC Data.
Thundercat’s lone entry on the list to date, Golden was reissued in a 10th anniversary deluxe translucent red vinyl version, including two bonus tracks, for Record Store Day Black Friday (Nov. 26). The album first hit the chart dated Sept. 17, 2011, at No. 9 with 1,400 copies sold that week, marking its only prior week on the ranking.
Thundercat’s recent featured turn on Lotus’ “Black Gold” brought him his first Hot Dance/Electronic Songs entry (No. 18 peak in May). Last week, Thundercat collected his second, as featured on KAYTRANADA’s “Be Careful” (No. 20).
‘WORLD’ NEWS Additionally on Top Dance/Electronic Albums, Alan Walker strolls in with World of Walker (No. 10, 2,600 units). It’s Walker’s second top 10 showing, after Different World (No. 2, December 2018).
On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Walker’s collaboration with Benjamin Ingrosso, “Man on the Moon,” lands at No. 20, thanks to 793,000 U.S. streams. It’s Walker’s 31st chart hit (and Ingrosso’s first), dating to “Faded” (No. 7, 2016). Walker has notched two other top 10s: “Darkside,” featuring Au/Ra and Tomine Harket (No. 9, 2018), and “On My Way,” with Sabrina Carpenter and Farruko (No. 8, 2019).
LOOKING ‘GOOD’ Pitbull pulses to his third Hot Dance/Electronic Songs top 10 with “I Feel Good,” featuring Anthony Watts and DJWS (12-9). The first top 10 for both featured acts, “Good” grabs top Sales Gainer honors, up 44% to 2,000 sold. Plus, the track, whose R3HAB remix was released Dec. 3, drew 472,000 streams.
Previously, Pitbull achieved top 10 status with “Feel This Moment,” featuring Christina Aguilera (No. 1 for two weeks, April-May 2013), and as featured on Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” (No. 4, 2020, following its original run in 2011, thanks to Lopez’s, and Shakira’s, Super Bowl LIV halftime show spotlight).
BREAKING ‘PROMISES’ Plus, Diplo wins the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart’s top Streaming Gainer nod with “Promises,” with Paul Woolford and Kareen Lomax (42-24). It pulled in 541,000 streams, up 82%, after the Paul Woolford and Diplo Remix was released Nov. 26.
“Promises” also parades 17-9 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, earning Diplo his 10th top 10, while Woolford and Lomax each celebrate seconds (after “Looking for Me,” billed as by Paul Woolford, Diplo and Kareen Lomax; No. 4, September 2020).
“Promises” is receiving core-dance play at stations including KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco, MusicChoice’s Dance/EDM Channel and WZFL (Revolution 93.5) Miami. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on nearly 80 top 40-formatted reporters.)
